Jessica Day George

To my mother's great disappointment, I had no grand adventures to report this week. Part of the blame can be laid on my author du jour, Jessica Day George. It all happened like this:

One day a couple of months ago, I was browsing books on amazon.com, as I do sometimes, and my browsing led me to several books that are fairy tales rewritten. I love fairy tales, and when somebody is able to take a beloved 10-page story and turn it into a 200-page (or more) book, I'm not only impressed, I'm delighted. I love those books.

Somehow, and this part I can't explain because I don't normally do this, I moved from amazon.com to the webpage of one author: Jessica Day George. And there I saw a picture of the author - whom, to my great surprise, I recognized.

You see, back in my college days, I spent a year living in what was known as the French House. It was a wonderful year, and has yielded me some of my closest, and longest-lasting, friendships. But one of the people that I haven't kept in touch with is Monsieur George. During that fun-filled year, Monsieur George got engaged to Jessica Day.

The summer after that year I left on a mission, and never saw either Monsieur George or Jessica Day again - until I came to the website of Jessica Day George and found her picture! I was delighted and immediately wanted to read all of her books.

So I went back to amazon.com, because I am a totally devoted customer, and looked in the Kindle store. Sadly, I only found one book by Jessica Day George in the Kindle store, and it turned out to be the third book in a trilogy. So I used the "Contact Jessica" page of her website, and sent a message saying hello (just in case she remembered me) and telling her that I hoped she'd put all her books on Kindle soon because I cannot buy anymore books because they are too heavy to ship around the world in this crazy lifestyle that I've chosen.

And then I bought other books for the Kindle and went on my merry shopping way.

Happily, I recently looked up Jessica Day George in the Kindle store again, and ta da! All of her books are there! I promptly bought the Dragon Slippers trilogy, and promised myself that the next purchase would be the Princess books.

And then, on Friday night, when I had a few free hours, I opened my Kindle and began to read Dragon Slippers. Today is Monday, and I have finished Dragon Slippers and Dragon Flight. And I have read more than half of Dragon Spear. They are truly delightful books. If you like Patricia C. Wrede or Gail Carson Levine, then you should pick up the nearest Jessica Day George book and dive in. You'll love it.

At least, I love it. And I consider myself a particular fan of fairy tale books.

Now if only she would get the audio books out, I would listen to them. Send her another email and see if you can't get that happening... :)

I'll have to read her stuff - Patricia C Wrede and Gail Carson Levine are two of my most favorite authors. I too, although without your moving restrictions on weight, am crossing my fingers for a kindle. And trying to clean out what books I do have and whittle it down to the ones I really love. I've moved my books three times in three years, and next time I'd like there to be less of them.
